Adult Classes - Designing For The Laser Cutter Using Inkscape

  • LEVEL: BEGINNER–INTERMEDIATE (best suited to those who have completed our Introduction To Laser Cutting class or already have some basic laser cutter experience)
  • DURATION: 3 x 2hr Evening Sessions (7–9pm)
  • COST: $175

This hands on, 3 week course is aimed at those who want to take the next step with laser cutting by learning how to design their own files in the open source programme Inkscape. It’s a chance to move beyond simply using pre-made files and start understanding how to create clean, functional, laser-ready designs yourself.

Participants will learn the core tools and workflows needed to use Inkscape for laser cutting, including drawing vector shapes, editing paths, working with text and images, layers, and preparing files for cutting and engraving. Along the way we’ll look at the practical side of laser design and how to work with the laser cutter’s capabilities and limitations in mind.

Students will have access to a laser cutter during the course to test and refine their designs, making this a practical class focused on real outcomes rather than just screen-based tutorials. The goal is to build confidence with both the software and the design process, so participants can leave with the skills needed to create their own laser-cut projects.
